Much has appeared in the press regarding the number of companies entering an insolvency process; so here are my observations for what they are worth. In Q2 2022 there were 279 notices of Administration appointments. For Q2 2023 the number is 392 (up 41%). For MVLs the numbers are 2424 and 2363 respectively (down 2.5%). CVLs 4754 and 5255 ( up 11%). CVAs 31 and 58 (up 87%). LPA Receiverships 80 and 175 (up 119%).
Notices of Appointments for October continue to show an increase. There were 172 Administrations in October up 10% from September’s 156. October’s MVLs were 856, 14 % up from 748. CVLs were 1861 also up 14% from 1635. CVAs nearly trebled to 22 from 8. LPA receiverships were up 18% from 57 to 67.
As expected, 2023 insolvencies are significantly greater than those for 2022. In 2023 there were 1855 Administrations compared to 1261 in 2022 (up 47%). For CVLs the figures were 25860 and 18885 (37%) respectively. MVLs 12558, 10100 (21%); whilst on much smaller numbers LPA Receiverships and CVAs showed the greatest change. LPAs were 769, 376(105%); CVAs 234, 111 (111%)

After a quiet January, normal service has been resumed for February 2024. There were 176 notices of Administrations; the highest monthly number since July 2020. In February there were 648 notices of MVLs compared with 552 in January; 1799 English CVL notice (January 1277) and 67 LPA Receiverships (January 58). Don’t forget your Mum next Sunday
In some respects the 1st Q of 2024 was not very different to Q1 2023. Administrations increased from 355 to 446 (up25%); MVLs fell from 2610 to 1998 (down 24%); English CVLs were steady (Q1 2023 was 4885, Q1 2024 was 4818). Of the non-mainstream insolvencies LPA receiverships increased from 137 to 203 (up 48%).
April was not particularly noteworthy. There were 134 notices of Administration appointments for England and Wales compared with 126 for April 2023. There were 893 MVL notices v. 1130 for Apr 23. 1815 CVLs compared with 1619 and 57 LPA receiverships compared with 32 for last April.
In the main part May’s and June’s numbers were similar to April’s. July has seen an uptick for the major insolvency procedures with Administration notices coming in at 157 (June 131 and May 138); English CVLs were 1719 (June 1563 and May 1728); MVLs were 921 (June 707 and May 685). The more noticeable changes were the recent filing reductions in LPA Receiverships and CVAs. LPAs were 57 in April, 78 in May, 13 in June and only 4 in July. CVA filings were 12 in April, 22 in May, 5 in June and 6 in July. The major difference with these latter procedures is that the Company continues with Directors in control. As a simple number cruncher I can’t see why this would suddenly matter. Any comments would be appreciated.
3/10/24
Q3 figures overall have not been significantly different to what has come previously; compared with Q2, Administrations were down 5% (475 to 423), English CVLs were down 6% (5023 to 4794), but MVLs were up 23% (2202 tos 2816). LPA numbers have returned to near normality with 23 filings in September. CVA numbers however remain low at 6.
7/11/24
Administrations are down in October, 120 compared with 156 in September and 172 in October 2023. MVLs have rocketed, 2827 in October compared with 1112 in September (increase of 154%) and 856 in October 2023 (increase of 230%). There were 1658 CVLs in October compared with 1434 in September (increase of 15.6%) but fewer than Oct 2023 when there were 1861 (so down 11%).
